EARLY ERA CLASSES
Chauffeur-Driven - Town Cars & Limousines
Owner-Driven - Roadsters & Speedsters
In the earliest years of the automobile, power and luxury were essentially the same thing. Luxury required power to move the weight of the cars. When the companies decided to go racing to prove the value of their engineering, they stripped the bodies off and replaced them with a hood and two seats and the speedster was born. When owners requested a similar car to drive on the road, slightly more elaborate bodies were designed and the roadster was born.
CLASSIC ERA CLASSES
Duesenbergs

In the Classic era, the Duesenberg represented the perfect melding of power and luxury. Designed and engineered to compete with the world's most luxurious and powerful cars, the Duesenberg Model J was introduced to the world in December 1928. It was the epitome of luxury, at a price only the elite could afford. The car was lightyears ahead of its time. Regardless of body configuration, with a 265 hp engine (and 320 hp when supercharged) nothing came close to the power of this production car. Other makes began to split their focus, building different styles for different purposes.

POST WAR ERA CLASSES

Power for the People
Fabulous Fiberglass
In the Post War era, power and luxury began to move into the mass market with the emergence of the OHV V-8, superchargers, and fuel injection. In another part of the market, small companies began producing bodies made from the new miracle material, fiberglass, that promised to turn any conventional car chassis into a sports car in both looks and performance. Meanwhile, custom coach builders and some manufacturers shifted their luxury offerings to cars for the Hollywood Elite.

Europe Muscles In
In the eighties, the European manufacturers joined the chase; first with the mighty Mercedes Benz 300 SEL 6.3, and then with tuning houses like AMG, Alpina, Schnitzer, and the BMW 'M' division. On the luxury front, their more conservative designs offered a stark contrast to their American counterparts.

Supercar Speed Kings
The eighties and nineties saw a resumption of the horsepower wars, but on a different battleground: the exotic sports car market. The Vector W8, Dodge Viper, and Corvette ZR-1 went up against the Porsche 959, Ferrari F-40, Lamborghini Countach, and McLaren F1 for top speed honors.

Muscle Trucks
A quirky and thoroughly American take on power was the "muscle truck". Beginning with the 1978 Dodge "Little Red Express Truck" and continuing through several generations of Dodge SRT's and Ford Lightnings, as well as various tuner shop editions (Shelby, Hennessy), the muscle truck is still with us today.
