Syd Mead RECEIVES 2017 EyesOn Design
Lifetime Design Achievement Award

Visual futurist Syd Mead received the 2017 EyesOn Design Lifetime Design Achievement Award June 16 at a black tie gala in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan attended by automotive and design industry luminaries. The award, given annually by the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology, is unique in that voting is limited to automotive designers who have previously won the award. The voting panel for 2017 included Chris Bangle, Wayne Cherry, Willie G. Davidson, Walter de Silva, Patrick le Quement, Tom Gale, Bob Lutz, Shiro Nakamura, Chuck Pelly, Steward Reed, Peter Schreyer and Jack Telnack.

In addition, Mead created the artwork for the commemorative poster for the 30th annual EyesOn Design Automotive Design Exhibition which took place on June 18. The poster was unveiled at a media and industry event at John Varvatos in Detroit earlier this year.

Mead began his career in Ford Motor Company's Advanced Styling Studio but soon went to work for other clients, including U.S. Steel, Celanese, Allis Chalmers and Phillips Electronics and he quickly became known for his futuristic designs ranging from solar-powered unicycles to interplanetary spacecraft.

In 1979, projects began to include work with most major picture studios, on such feature films as Star Trek: The Motion Picture, followed by Bladerunner, TRON, 2010, Short Circuit, Aliens, Time Cop, Johnny Mnemonic, Mission Impossible-3, and most recently Elysium starring Jodi Foster and Matt Damon. Syd has developed close working relationships with major Japanese corporate clients, including; Sony, Minolta, Dentsu, Dyflex, Tiger, Seibu, Mitsukoshi, Bandai, NHK and Honda.

With transportation design as his first love, Syd Mead seldom misses an opportunity to provide his unique blend of futurism and believability to those projects consisting of a vehicle that travels from “A” to ‘B”. Whether it be designing solar powered unicycles, show cars, luxury yachts, cruise ships,  the interiors of private 747s, or interplanetary spacecraft, each receives the same attention to detail within a perfectly designed scenario. This combination has become a Syd Mead trademark and has been seen in everything from concept cars for Ford Motor Company to futuristic “Hypervans” which have been the subject of his latest full color illustrations
